Local Students Benefit from Work Experience with 2LS

Once again this year 2LS have taken on a number of local students to give them work experience.
We take on students at a variety stages of their education. So far this year we have had both a GCSE and an A level student with us for short periods and last week saw the completion of a very successful summer internship. Akshay, a third year Computer Science student, spent 12 weeks with 2LS as part of the SEED placement scheme organised by the University of Reading.
All student placements are conceived around a specific project which will benefit the business and the individual. We don’t believe in students simply shadowing; they carry out real and valuable work which is part of our company’s business strategy and will contribute to our success.
For our most recent placement, Akshay was recruited specifically to develop a mobile version of our GRIP recruitment software. We selected him via the same process we use for any member of staff, to ensure he matched the skills and knowledge needed. We try to select students that have transferable skills which will support our business; we give them the opportunity to use them to benefit the business.
Speaking about the internship Akshay said “I had only previously worked in larger organisations. It is rare for very small companies to offer placements and for any company to offer ‘real work’ placements. This was an exceptional opportunity not just for hands-on software development experience but also for a perspective on business in general and why decisions are made.”
It has been great working with Akshay over the summer and he has delivered not one but two products that we will be rolling out over the coming months.
If you are interested in doing an internship with 2LS next summer keep an eye on the jobs page where we will post more details.
