Support for End of Life Microsoft Products
Microsoft has a three phase support policy for all it’s business and developer products, such as the Windows operating systems. These phases are as follows:
- years 1 – 5 : Mainstream support
- years 5 – 10 : Extended support
- years 10+ : on-line support
In practice this means that Microsoft will now provide five years of free product support from the official release date of a product. They will then provide a further five years of free security patches before ceasing support after this ten year period.
On-line self help will continue to be provided for a period after this but no upgrades will be released.
In practice this means that should a problem occur in a Microsoft product after this ten year period, Microsoft would not address the problem.
2LS’s products rely on a number of Microsoft products, such as Windows and Office. In order to provide the highest quality of service to it’s customers 2LS has decided to bring it’s policy in line with that of Microsoft’s.
How this affects you
This does not mean that you will be required to upgrade to a later version of a Microsoft product after this date. You can continue to run 2LS products on “retired” Microsoft products for as long after the support ceases as your business needs dictate. However, if a problem is found that is directly attributable to a Microsoft product for which support has been withdrawn then 2LS will be unable to provide a fix for this and the only option will be to upgrade to a supported version of the Microsoft product.
